A step-by-step guide to replace Spiral Staircase with Floating Stairs

5.6.2025

Sick of that old spiral staircase killing the vibe? Dreaming of swapping it out for a sleek, modern floating stair that screams luxury and style? You’ve landed on the right page, so let’s find out what you should do next.

1. Do NOT call up a stair manufacturer just yet!

Unless you’ve got loads of space and you’re 110% sure the new stair will fit, you could be wasting a whole lot of time. See stairs Stair Standards page to see minimum step, landing or winder size.

2. Hire a Structural Engineer

As they say, leave it to the pros! Before the fun begins, you should hire a structural engineer who can advise you on any structural changes needed to the first floor slab since a lot of Australian Standards have to be kept in mind before making any amendment. They'll draw up a plan showing exactly what needs to change. Generally, builders install steel beam or Lvl timber where stair is to be fixed to slab. The bottom of stair can be fixed to brick, concrete or timber. However, analysis from structural engineering is required.

3.  Get a Carpenter on-board

Let the carpenter take charge now. He willnow follow the drawing made by the structural engineer and get the structureready for you.

But PROTIP- do not just sit and enjoy your popcorns. Make sure there are proper fixing points for the balustrade (those are the securespots where the railing gets attached, if you are not sure what does it mean, Aussie Stairs is happy to help because we’re not just about projects, we’reabout people. Hey? Does that sound a lot to do?

You can always hire a builder to do the whole thing, butfair warning- it might leave a little hole in your wallet.
